Abstracts/Etc: 요약Seoul Municipal Opera Company was intended to be established in 1978 when Sejong Culture Center opened. However, the intention to establish the company was not fulfilled. Seoul Municipal Opera Company was officially established according to the regulations of Seoul in 1985. At that time, the Company was established in order to plan culture Olympics with hosting of '86 Asian Games and '88 Olympics. Furthermore, as we can understand from the establishment philosophy of Seoul Municipal Opera Company of 'globalization of Korean opera, creation and development of Korean operas, culturally serving the people of Seoul with world class performances,' the main objective of the Company was to produce global and world-class operas. However the problem lay in the fact that such artistic objective was not easy to achieve. The first leader of Seoul Municipal Opera Company, Prof. Kim, Shin-hwan promised to make the Company a world famous municipal opera company within 2 years and to make it a company with a tradition. However, such statement made by the professor who was well aware of the fact that such tradition and fame couldn't be achieved overnight could only be understood as a statement simply considering the international Olympics event that was coming up in 2 years. Such is a problem that Seoul Municipal Opera Company was facing at the time of the establishment. Consequently, under the proposition of internationalization and globalization, the Company invited the staff from Italy to produce operas which ended up hurting the identity of the Company. Additionally, such structural problem continued on even after the '88 Seoul Olympics. The practice of the Company focusing on producing international and global operas rather than keeping the royal summons of producing performances for the city people faced a transition when Sejong Culture Center was reborn as an individual corporation in 1999. Sejong Culture Center as a juridical foundation, tried to disorganize Seoul Municipal Opera Company in order to enhance its ability to plan performances and to increase financial independence. The people in the musical society opposed to the disorganization of the Company and Sejong Culture Center has changed its ways of planning performances and inviting producers from abroad. In the year 2000, Sejong Culture Center planned performances in new ways. Sejong Opera Festival was planned together with Seoul Opera Company. 2000 Sejong Opera - 156 - Festival which was initially planned in correspondence to opera festival conducted by Seoul Arts Center was an effort to help the people become more familiar with opera. Such effort to popularized opera can be seen at the first performance of Father, I Got Married(Secret Marriage). In this performance, young actors aged between 30 and 35 were cast and Cho, Sung-jin, the performing arts producing manager of Sejong Culture Center personally participated in the audition. Such effort can be viewed as a new effort in trying to popularize performing arts. In the 21st century, as a juridical foundation, we hope to see Sejong Culture Center become a performing arts center that people can easily step into by helping them become more familiar with opera.
