■520    ▼aDeokmoo  Lee  (1741-1793)  in  late  Joseon  Dynasty  wrote  many  articles  regarding  women.  Among  his  articles,  Sasojeol  emphasized  that  scholars  should  be  well-mannered  in  any  trivial  matters  of  daily  life  in  order  to  be  of  good  behavior.  "Female  Courtesy"  in  which  Deokmoo  Lee's  point  of  views  on  women  were  clearly  manifested,  is  a  very  valuable  part  of  Sasojeol  since  it  is  an  educational  article  for  women  written  by  a  man.  Sasojeol  is  an  important  clue  for  understanding  of  the  custom  and  women's  position  in  the  society  of  the  time.
    In  part  2  of  this  paper,  Lee's  philosophy  of  life  based  on  the  scholastic  naivety  and  principle,  and  the  purpose  of  writing  Sasojeol  are  examined.  In  part  3,  he  showed  his  new  cognizance  of  women  criticizing  a  figment  of  "noble-sky-and-humble-land"  theory  which  meant  that  the  sky,  a  man,  is  high  and  novel  while  the  land,  a  woman,  is  low  and  humble.  His  attitude  was  progressive  because  he  thought  men  and  women  are  equal  in  an  androcentric  society.  Deokmoo  Lee  highlighted  needs  for  women  education  and  their  roles  in  a  family  in  the  transient  period  between  the  societies  of  middle  age  and  modern  age.  That  is,  if  necessary,  a  woman,  though  she  is  a  scholar's  wife,  should  support  her  family  through  working  outside  home.  The  ideal  woman  Lee  wanted  to  describe  in  Sasojeol  is  the  one  who  is  active  in  coping  with  her  environment  as  well  as  sincere  and  frugal.    
    The  purpose  of  this  study  is  to  examine  understanding  of  women  in  Deokmoo  Lee's  writing  based  on  recognition  of  women  presented  in  Sasojeol.
